River Roast

The River Roast is a modern American style restaurant. In Chicago, right on the river, it has the most amazing views and beautiful sights of the river. The ambience is pretty fancy making it the perfect place for a date night or bringing out of town friends to see the city. They are known for their roasts, but as a vegetarian I tried all of their veggie plates.

Burrata

The top right dish is their burrata. The bread was freshly made which enhanced the flavors of the overall piece. Tomatoes tasted as if they were imported from Italy. Since I lived in Italy for a month, I‘ve learned I only like a specific tomato, and these were amazing. As well, the cheese was perfect and all of the flavors blended nicely. We also go the meatballs on the left but I didn’t eat those. 4/5

Grilled Asparagus & Potatoes

First off, I don’t even like asparagus. I decided today was when I was going to try it. I was not disappointed. There was a tarragon vinaigrette that added such a wonderful flavor to the veggies. The crispy shallots were a cool decoration but were not needed. I ate the whole plate. 5/5

The RR Potatoes were okay. They were cooked well, had an interesting flavor. I think they put lemon on them which made the potatoes almost sour. The cut was also too big and heavy for this type of potato. I wouldn’t order again but we ate most of them. 2/5

Carrots & Dirt

No like that’s what it’s called on the menu. The dirt part is the black garlic. Super fun name, super delicious dish. I rarely like cooked carrots and this was amazing. Carrots weren’t too mushy and the mix of the black garlic, pumpernickel, goat cheese, and balsamic worked effortlessly together. The only thing I wish was done different is that they would give more. This is not a lot of carrots for $13. 3/5

Broccoli Cheddar Soup

This was highly underwhelming. I got the broccoli cheddar soup for my main course, and it was not up to the best flavor. Maybe they made it a different way than I am used to, but I couldn’t finish it. I was also confused why it was so green, but yeah I wasn’t a fan. I think it needed more cheese or dairy. 1/5

Chocolate Cake

It was Jakob’s birthday so he got some gelato and cake. This was hands down delicious. Luckily we got one piece for four of us and had half the cake leftover. It was so think and rich that it filled us up real fast. Out of all the desserts, order the chocolate cake. The Gelato was pretty good, but had some ice chunks in it. 4/5

Wrap Up

I would come back to River Roast in Chicago. The summer would be cool to sit on the patio right next to the river and see the boats go by. Order the asparagus, carrots, buratta, and cake when you go. The flavors melt in your mouth making you like foods you didn’t even know you could like. Overall, this place is a 3/5.
